A Shadow in the Wings

Happy Halloween, All!

In the spirit of the holiday, I’ve posted a draft of a story that I’ve been working on. You can read it below.

As it is very much a work in progress, please let me know what you think in the comments!

A Shadow in the Wings

by Meg Masterson

The alleyway was abandoned except for Kyle’s beat-up Jeep and moonlight spilling onto the pitted asphalt and piles of trash. Years of debris had blown into the corners of the narrow dead-end, and no one had cared enough to do much about it. Kyle leaned against the building at the mouth of the alley, watching the dim and mostly-empty street, while Scott knelt before the door handle. Jessie held a flashlight for him as he worked his father’s lock picks. Continue reading “A Shadow in the Wings”

“The Rocky Horror Show” at the Missouri Street Theatre

Let’s do the Time Warp again!

The Rocky Horror season is upon us, and a plethora of different adaptations of the show are available for cult classic connoisseurs. From showings of the film with shadow casts to Green Valley’s circus-themed spectacle to the Missouri Street Theatre’s great adaptation, there is something available for every persuasion. “The Rocky Horror Show” at Green Valley Theatre Company

Like children before the holidays, Sacramento’s theater community antici…pates the revel that is Rocky season each year. 2014 marks the sixth time Green Valley Theatre Company has brought The Rocky Horror Show to the stage, and this year’s rendition is incredible.

The stage musical was the precursor to the 1975 cult classic film, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, starring Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick. Green Valley gave the show a twist this year, with a circus-themed set and costumes, and it works brilliantly. Continue reading ““The Rocky Horror Show” at Green Valley Theatre Company”

“Frankenstein” at Resurrection Theatre

Jes Gonzales’ adaptation of Frankenstein premiered Friday at Resurrection Theatre, and it was excellent.

This version of Mary Shelley’s horror story puts a fresh face and an unexpected twist on the classic man-playing-god story with high production values and a great cast.

With a simple and effective set, handsome costumes and good lighting, the technical aspects of this show, along with great direction from Adrienne Sher, provided a solid foundation for the actors. Continue reading ““Frankenstein” at Resurrection Theatre”

“The Addams Family” at the 6th Street Playhouse

The creepy and kooky Addams family comes to life at the 6th Street Playhouse through October.

Wednesday Addams has grown up and fallen in love. She invites her boyfriend, Lucas, and his parents over for dinner, begging her family for just “one normal night.” Things go awry, of course, and the story hurtles toward darkness — which, in this case, isn’t a bad thing! “Evil Dead the Musical” at Sutter Street Theatre

Good heavens, I have taken FAR too long in getting this review out there. But here it is!

Sutter Street Theatre brings Evil Dead the Musical to demonically possessed life this October. The show itself is hilarious – extremely campy and entirely self-aware, with songs including “All of the Men in my Life Keep Getting Killed by Candarian Demons” and “Do the Necronomicon.” Groan-worthy (but hilarious) puns pepper the script, and funny lyrics and musical devices keep the action rolling.
